MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING DEPARTMENT

The main objectives of this department is to help the students to acquire knowledge and develop profiency in caring for patients with medical surgical disorders in variety of health care settings and help the students to develop positive attitude in providing care to patients with medical surgical disorders.

Various teaching methods were used in explaining disease conditions in classroom like Lecture cum discussion, Demonstration, Power Point Presentation, Case discussion.

Students were evaluated by written test and assignments. Periodical examination and unit test were conducted in timely basis. Marks are informed to the parents by sending the postcards.

Clinical postings were planned for the students based on the university prescribed hours. Students were posted in various medical surgical and speciality areas like General medical wards (Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, Endocrine, Renal, Haematology), General Surgical Ward (GI, Urinary, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgical areas), Cardiology ward, Skin and Communicable disease wards, Orthopaedic ward, Neuro surgical wards, Intensive care units, Oncology wards, Emergency and Critical care units, Burns unit, Eye ward, ENT ward, Outpatient department Clinical Laboratory, Blood bank, Plastic and Reconstructive surgical unit, Rehabilitation unit, Palliative care unit, Operation theatre.

Students are required to plan and give care to 3-4 assigned patients in each medical surgical and speciality areas. Students were supervised in clinical areas by clinical instructors in each ward. Students have taken Nursing care plans, Nursing care study, Clinical Presentation, Maintained drug book and completed all procedures prescribed in the practical work book.

Daily in the clinical areas students have written atleast one patient’s history, physical assessment and Nursing process for their assigned patient in clinical areas. It was supervised and corrected by clinical instructors.

OT classes were taught by the specially skilled person in the operation theatre, They have witnessed and assisted major and minor surgeries. They also participated in infection control measures in OT and also they could identify instruments used for common surgeries. Students have given counselling to critical ill patients, cancer and HIV infected patients and their families.

Clinical performance of the students were assessed using rating scale after completing each ward. Students were evaluated by care plans, care study, presentation, Health education, drug book procedure skill by rating scale and completion of Activity record. We also conducted Practical Examination and objective structured clinical examination in clinical areas to assess knowledge technical and practical skills.

Anecdotal notes were maintained for each students. Students had the observational visit to old age home, Leprosy home, Rehabilitation Centre, Blind School. Students have conducted programmes for them and have given effective counselling.

Students were participated and celebrated important days like Youth day, Hand washing day, Yoga day, Blood donation day and Anti drug day.

There by the medical surgical department is helping the students to enrich their knowledge.
